Advice for model airplane making

These are some things on model airplane making we discovered the hard way

  • The most important thing is to be neat.  If you get glue everywhere, you will have to spend more time than necessary cleaning the parts.  Also, if you get glue on your hands or fingers, you will find that it will make holding and letting go of the parts a lot harder.

  • You should, of course, read the directions.  Some parts may seem obvious, but you still might put the parts together in the wrong order or in the wrong places.  A lot of parts look identical (e.g. the two main gear, the weapon, and the wings or elevators).  The parts will be labeled with numbers (at least most of the time), so be sure to look at them as the instructions will refer to them.

  • If you want to make your model look nice, you will want an airbrush to paint.  Although they are more expensive than brushes, they will deliver better results.  If you do get an airbrush, be sure to get a compressor.  Your airbrush will most likely come with a can of compressed air, but you will find that you will spend a lot more money on buying cans of compressed air than a single, good compressor.

  • When you use an airbrush, be sure to keep your paint clean.  If the paint has any dried pieces of paint or any other junk in it, the airbrush will clog and you will have to clean it.  Although cleaning an airbrush may not sound too bad, and it is really not that hard, unless you are very careful, you will probably lose or break a part.
