You are about to see some beautiful worker.  Our cousin, Phil, is an experienced wood worker with a workshop that would make the folks at 'This Old House' jealous!   He guided Dom and I through the creation of a bowel.  As always, click on the image for larger.

Well, this is the finished product.  A segmented bowl -- called that way because it is made up of wood segments glued together and then turned on a lathe.  This was a very simple starter 'model', but you can imagine the beauty when combining woods of different colors.

The key starting point is a sketch of the bowl contours.  You can see how it is sectioned.

The first thing is the base, which will be made by gluing 4 sections.

After the first cut we have 4 pieces.

The rough circle is cut with a band saw.

We are now ready to cut the segments.  A jig is VERY important here to get the correct angle.

Just use regular wood glue.

Bring the pices together.

We use an automotive type clamp to hold them together.

Into the vise to make sure they are all plane.

Start to collect quite a few sections.

At times you can get a bad fit where a gap appears -- don't worry about it, don't glue it!

Glued the rest, and left the gap where we had a poor fit.

Sand down the rough spot and blue together.

It's starting to look like a bowl. Just a little rough around the edges!

After everything dries we take the clamps off -- there it all is, ready to be glued together!

Aren't they beautiful!

Now, we sand them down.  We want a good fit.

There is our base -- looks a lot nicer.

We put the base on the lathe for a little 'work'.

We cut in a base groove, that will be used to give the lathe chuck a grip -- an expanding chuck will be used.

Then we put it on the other chuck face and turn it smooth.

We glue the sections together.

To make the whole piece.

BUT we don't glue the top and bottom because we want to turn the inside.  Not really necessary because this will be a 'closed' bowl, but we wanted to learn technique of inside turning.

Time to get started on the bottom half.

Starting to smooth it out.

Now we use a scraper.

It's starting to look like a bowl!

Time for a little discussion between Phil and I -- "I don't know what I'm doing!"

Getting a hand holding the scraper.

Getting ready to turn the inside.

It was Domenic's turn to work!

Dom's making a nice smooth inside.  You have to be careful!

Dad try's a stab at it!

Now we are working on the top half.

Starting to look like a bowl!

A little work on the inside.

Dom back at work.

Be careful on the neck, it is thin and we don't want to break through.

Wow, really a bowl!

The halves are glued together.

Notice the right hand guide being used to keep the piece stiff while being turned.

We work on the neck and lip.

Almost done! Time for sanding, very easy on the lathe!

We used some wire and pressed it up against the wood to make the groove lines in the neck.

Not too bad!
