Well,
this is not quite the before the picture. That is on the hobbies page.
Remember the stripped bolt, it is in the lower right of the picture. How
did I get it out? It took some doing. First I got some 'penetrating
oil' and sprayed the whole thing down. I let it sit for a while as I
collected my tools.
The most fun of any repair job is first getting the assorted
wrenches, sockets, etc.. all together. I like to keep them 'organized'
-- but it only lasts till the next job.
Anyway, I try the vise grips and nothing happens, other than I
strip the bolt a little bit more (okay, a lot more!). Someone at a part's
store also suggested I take a propane short and heat the caliper -- metal's
expand at different rates and that should help it release. Well, I took
the old torch out and gave it a blast.
There is a little rubber boot around the bolt. That caught
fire (an expected casualty), I'd already torn it up pretty good with the vise
grips. It started to smell pretty bad and I was just worried about the
caliper exploding or something (I did wear safety glasses). I tried it a
few times, nothing. Rammed my
hand
with the vise grips -- still nothing. Had just about given up and was
going to leave it for a mechanic -- but made one last desperate try. It
started to turn.
You can see the bolts on the left. I had bought a new one
to replace it.

Here are the two pads coming off. Not quite in wear balance. The
left pad
looked almost new. While the right pad was worn almost completely.
Here
you can see a good comparison of the old and new pads -- pretty big
difference! |
